What are you up to this weekend? We might take a nice little walk. By the wonderful Grace Farris.
they just moved to Texas to be closer to her family and she’s had a few weeks off of work during the transition with her kids
I’m slightly concerned that Grace is watching me through my window to craft these weekend mom pieces, but PLEASE NEVER STOP. They’re too good.
Oh my gosh I am weekend mom! I did slice an old whole watermelon bc I’m too busy to do it on weekdays and I DID put a cover on our blankets after MONTHS sleeping without them lol.
The other 2 things I do always.
Ha! This was seriously me this weekend, except it was a cantaloupe, not a watermelon! Spot on!
I am glad my kids are old enough now that I don’t have to hide to read something! LOL. Of course, now, I beg my teens to go for a walk with me!
Did ALL of these things this week.
Hahahahaha this is soo good, can totally relate with it
The duvet. ?
Ok, for real, any tips on how to get that damn duvet back into the cover? I go nuts every time trying and can’t sleep well if it’s not lined up! Help!
If you are able to sew, even just a little: open the seams in the corners of the cover, enough to make a hole big enough for your hand. Hem the fabric. Then when you change the cover, you stick your hands through those openings, grab the corners of the covet and shake it a little. If the covet and cover are big, you might need to lay it all down to fix the last two corners.
Most Swedish sheets are made like this from the beginning, and it was such a disappointment when I realized that Ikea no longer sell them, but rather the international ones, without openings :-).
Another ‘uncomplicated sewing‘ solution that I’ve come across when buying sheets in Japan: a bit of ribbon or shoelace sewn on the internal corners of the duvet cover, and the same on the external corners of the duvet. The cover is laid out inside out, and the corners secured together using a shoelace bow – then it’s an easy flip and no risk of duvet-slump during the week!
How I learned to do it in Switzerland: Turn the duvet cover inside out and hold it by the far corners, so it’s kind of bunched up on your arms. Grasp the duvet by the near corners, then shake hard a couple of times. The cover will fly over the duvet.
Yes!!!! The rolling burrito method has changed my life as a single mom.
1) lay the uncovered duvet flat on your bed.
2) turn the duvet cover inside out, and lay it on top of your duvet, with the buttons or zipper at the bottom of the duvet.
3) roll the duvet and duvet cover into a sushi roll or burrito – tightly roll them together, from the top towards the zipper/buttons.
4) when you get to the buttons/zipper, wrap the opening around the remaining duvet so you can close the zipper on top of the rolled duvet.
5) take the corners, shake out the duvet and voila! It’s covered! No wrestling required.
The burrito is life changing! Much easier to do alone too. I also bought comforters to minimize the duvet + cover – 6 of those was too much for me
@elliesee – I am obviously not American, nor is English my language, and now I am confused :-). What is a duvet and what is a comforter? And what is a blanket? Don’t they all need sheets/covers, or do you sleep with either of them ”bare”?
HAHAHAHA this is good.
However, she’s missing a bruise on her shin from the scooter swinging while she moves it in the garage…
Omg. YES.
Also, I’m a bit of a smug mom when I slice up a whole watermelon. I’m so self-sufficient, slightly whimsical, seasonal, and healthy!
Might slice a whole watermelon ??
I FEEL SEEN
If you search “magic duvet cover tip” you will find the easiest way to get a duvet cover in! No shaking, no stuffing, no fighting. I wash my covers a bajillion more times than i used to because of this tip.
Best home tip ever. This exhausted virtual kindergarten teacher is going to roll out a fresh duvet cover and take a long NAP!
Is Grace back with her kids? Does anyone know? I think of them often… Brilliant as always!
Yes! Her family recently moved to Austin :)
Yes, they just moved to Texas to be closer to her family and she’s had a few weeks off of work during the transition with her kids. I believe she just started her new job in TX. Now I sound like a stalker…I just follow her comics on Instagram and apparently I absorbed a lot haha!
Yes! I follow her on insta and they are all together. They also moved to Texas where she is now working as a doctor.
Weekend plans done. Thanks!
This week, I was walking down the street with my friend when...
