Three Fall Looks We’re Spotting Everywhere

We’ve been spotting fall trends around the city. Want to weigh in?

First up: Animal prints add edge to any look and style guru Jenna Lyons say they work as a neutral. I’d love to wear them to work or on a low-key date night. Three favorites: Pullover, clutch and heels.

Moss green feels cozy and autumnal, and it would look great paired with dark jeans and red lipstick. Three picks: Sweater, dress and shoes.

Tall boots channel the 1970s, and they pair beautifully with pants or a dress. Three lovely ones: Black, brown and suede.

Thoughts? Do you like any of these? Here’s a mix of two, if you want to really go for it. :)

You wear with them whatever you like, no? It’s a question of personal preference. Whatever you feel comforable with. Personally, I have had an investment pair of tall boots for years, and I still love them with a knee length tweed or corduroy skirt (Boden has cute ones), or with skinny pants. It’s a classic look. But perhaps at 50 I am beyond the age where I care too much about wearing the newest look. I have found my style, I switch it up, but generally, I wear what I like!

Here’s when I stop wearing certain items (like tall boots, hip hugger jeans, shrunken cardigans, overalls, flannel shirts): they don’t fit anymore or have become uncomfortable, they are worn out, I don’t like them anymore (which rarely happens). If no one else is wearing the item because it’s not “cool”, fine by me. I don’t want to look like everyone else. The idea that we should wear something just because it’s fashionable leads to so much waste, and it’s just not joyful either. Wear what suits you and what you like.

I bought a similar Madewell sweater and with one wear it pilled like crazy where my crossover bag made contact. Is there any way to avoid this, without changing purses? Some kind of magic trick I’m not privy to?

Tall boots have never been out of style, especially tucked into skinny jeans. That’s timeless New England, timeless prep, timeless Southern… like a white oxford – always a winner.
My Nine West knee-high boots with a slouch at the ankle get so many compliments every year (13 years, still going strong). My riding boots with an oil toe are from Vince Camuto and have done tremendously well over the last 7 years (from city walking to being in mud out in the woods).

BOTH fit my ginormous, extra athletic calves perfectly (years of ballet, running, and now weightlifting).

I like adding maroon/wine to my very neutral wardrobe when it gets chilly, but I love the moss green being featured!

I should clarify I don’t mean “out of style” as being unfashionable — I just wasn’t seeing them on blogs, in magazines, etc. as much as I was seeing booties.

respectfully, tall boots + leggings scream 2008. same fashion era , in my opinion, as when everyone and their mom was lusted over the new JCrew catalog. A more innocent time, perhaps, but also almost 12 years ago (!) — a lot of the more hip stores haven’t even or ever carried tall boots (i’m thinking of stores like everlane…). J crew’s still nice and tall boots are fine, but I wouldn’t say they’ve been “cool” in a while. I think many of the commenters here are just noting that wearing them with a dress or skirt, like posted above, is giving it a fresh look that’s “cool” again

Totally agree with the big come back with animal prints (although it’s always there in the background).

As for the moss green sweater, love it! I would love a similar green sweater to Kurt Cobain’s green cardigan that was sold recently for $334,000.

I got a menswear sweater that is a similar style to that that’s called a shaggy dog-it’s a traditional brushed wool shetland. I bet if you search “brushed wool” cardigan something will turn out?! that’s literally all my grandpa wore and I wish I had gotten to them before my aunt took them all to the thriftstore! it’s a classic 60s old man style

I’ve worn tall boots for years as well as animal prints and moss green. I’m short, too, so it helps to try on boots in a store. As another reader mentioned, many styles are available in wide calf versions. I wear my tall boots with skirts, and if it’s cold, I do tuck in my pant legs.

Did not get the memo that tall boots ever went out, esp with skinnies or leggings? I have a pair of Frye’s in the most gorgeous cognac color with strappy details and a chunky heel that make me feel fabulous when paired with dark skinnies (yes, tucked in…to show off the boots!) – I’ll be happily wearing them again this year that way – I say wear whatever makes you feel fabulous too!

I got a pair of never worn, strappy Frye’s last year at a thrift shop for $20. They may hug my calves a smidge aggressively but I love them!

What can you wear knee high boots with these days? I’ve heard that it’s out of style to tuck skinny jeans into them?!? ? I’ve spent the last five years pregnant, having babies, and breastfeeding that I’m feeling so out of the loop on fashion! Someone help?!?

Wear them with a long dress, or an oversized sweater that goes past your butt, or a suede skirt and a ribbed turtleneck!

Haha, I can so relate! It’s only been 4 for me, but it feels like forever in the same clothes! I’ve started wearing timeless things and even sewing a couple of numbers for myself (thanks Mat leave!)

Personally, I love skinny jeans tucked into tall boots. It is a classic look the elongates you no matter your height. To always chase the “in” looks imho only leads to consumerism and insecurity.

It was weird…tall boots went out of style so fast around here (Midwest), but I wear mine a ton with skirts or dresses since I don’t really care and just love tall boots!

I get it– I’m pregnant and I’ve not figured out a way to wear those new roomy straight leg (palazzo?) pants in a way that I like. But you can wear knee high boots however you want! Experiment with your closet and see what you like. I’ve noticed them combined with mini skirts on a lot of people (like Kim Kardashian and Bella Hadid).

Hmm… I still think tall leather boots look a bit 2011. But just like scrunchies and wide leg jeans and white Adidas sneakers, I can see them being the weird thing no one understands until suddenly they’re BACK and we can’t get enough.
