[Am interested in developing this theme of Victorian literature further by adding in an examination of Jane Austen’s Persausion, comparing the gothic and the Renaissance to Wentworth/navy and aristocracy]
John Ruskin and “The Stones of Venice”
The Victorian age was one of social upheaval in regards to class, rank and women. This theme can be seen in “The Stones of Venice,” as John Ruskin transforms an art critique into a societal one. Ruskin begins by expounding on the beauty of the rude and wild Gothic architecture of the Medievil period, but his purpose is not to revive gargoyles perched upon church ledges. Instead, he is concerned with reviving a society capable of producing architecture as an expression of an individual’s work. He argues against an industrial society aimed toward replication and perfection. A mechanized production-line society could not produce Gothic architecture but only imitations of its mannerisms. WH
Self-seeking business relationships might be made over on the principle of dedicated service, taking as a model the learned professions and also the military. The soldier, however crude, is more highly regarded by society than the capitalist, Ruskin said,
The manner in which he describes Gothic architecture.
The use of the word noble, nobility.
The division of men.

Love the idea of a rooftop dinner, with bubbles no less!
This is one of those things where you think “do people like this actually exist?” Seriously, it is too perfect. And plus, they are all way too well-dressed :-P
But..wouldn’t the bubbles get in the food? Okay, I’m being practical here. Yes, this is fun, just sayin’. :)
Now that’s what I call “Haute Whimsy!” What a wonderful idea!
Beautiful. I wish the weather here would cooperate so that we can start entertaining outdoors!
