For years, I would send my mom flowers for Mother’s Day. But they were expensive and always died after a week (or less!). Now I go for something she can use or wear for years. For my mom, I ordered her some wool dryer balls. Very practical, but I really love mine and I hope she likes them too. They decrease dryer time, and replace dryer sheets, which are expensive, wasteful and full of chemicals. And they are just really lovely to touch and look at too. (I do have to keep reminding the wolf collie pack that they are NOT THEIRS. Wool= sheep. It’s understandable).

And for the two mamas I nanny for, homemade rhubarb custard streusel pies (that the children helped bake). They were a hit. Anyone want some rhubarb? My patch has gone a bit crazy this year.

This year my mom and I are traveling to Oklahoma to see my 96 year old grandma for Mother’s Day and I’m so excited! We are going to get her flowers and take her out to lunch somewhere nice. Gifts are so fun of course but actually being with your mom or mother figure, or really whoever, is the best gift of all! PS you can never go wrong with some nice pjs, my mom loves her pajamas!

Since we are kind of on the subject of pj’s here… can I please ask for some advice? I love wearing shorts to bed, but anything with too wide of a leg opening just rides up like crazy during the night. My best solution so far has been my boyfriend’s boxer briefs because they are tighter on the leg… But does anyone have a suggestion of some women’s pj shorts that might have a similar, leg-hugging fit? Thanks in advance :)

um I used to LIVE in men’s boxer briefs at home- not even a boyf’s, i just bought my own! for a similar fit you could also try spandex workout shorts- they’re a little revealing for me to wear to the gym but I love them around the (no AC) house in the summer. the elastic waist isn’t great for me for sleeping, though.

Yes to this! Vote for your community with you wallet! For example, I LOVE having a neighborhood bookstore, and how it builds community and how storefronts keep the streets safer and all of the myriad benefits of small businesses… so why wouldn’t I support it when I could? These days we buy half as many books (the rest we check out from the library), but what we do buy we buy from Riverby Books or East City Bookshop. We only use amazon for things like toilet paper, batteries, and diapers, which we’d otherwise be getting at costco, anyway. Nearly everything else you can get from a small business – which is a vote for America, friends!!

I think it might be fun for a CoJ list to link to small businesses with an online presence, or to local businesses in different towns. E.g., the best spots to buy your mom a mother’s day pie in 15 cities across America (and then commenters can make suggestions for their own hometowns in the comments).

BUT, did you know that many MANY small stores and startups and small online retailers use amazon (in addition to personal websites and sometimes instead of expensive retail storefronts) to expand their customer base nationwide and reach new customers for far less than targeted advertisements cost and in ways that are more user friendly?

Tori — I hear that, but I’ve talked to some entrepreneurs about it and it’s actually a lot more complicated than that. Because Amazon has become so dominant online, many local, smaller businesses and entrepreneurs have no choice but to sell on the Amazon Marketplace if they want to get any traffic and be able to have an e-commerce operation. It’s really sad to see how the open Internet is getting taken over by these giants.

Oof, I’m disappointed in COJ for this. You’ve so often championed small businesses, but now you’re partnering with a company that’s engaged in brutal price wars, sustaining losses for years at the expenses of manufacturers and creators, in order to drive other retailers (including bookshops) out of business. It’s also well known that they have very questionable labor practices.

How about a donation in moms name? I donated Watsi one year and sponsored a mother in need. There are lots of good charities who need our support so find one near and dear to your (or your moms) heart and make a donation in her name. This works for all budgets and is a great tribute to your mom whether living or deceased.

Hi Cass- I hear you. My mother just died in December. It was a long, slow painful decline the last five years of her life. Mother’s Day is especially hard since they’re aren’t many good memories of those last years. I’m still processing it all so yeah, all the ads etc. can be a bit much. To be honest I feel they’re a bit much even if you have or are a mother. That being said, it is what it is and I just push through it like everything else. And also, it is not silly or ridiculous, it’s how you feel and the best thing you can do is to be kind to yourself. I have a new thing that brings me personal joy. I buy myself flowers every week, if the old ones are not quite ready to be tossed, I rearrange them in a mason jar and put them in another room (bathroom?), so then two of the rooms in my house have a bit of beauty in them.
