i’m so late with my feed. but i wanted to say: please update when you do watch Dirty Dancing. i was in 4th grade when i first saw it, and though it didn’t convince me to go into dancing (dirty or otherwise), it made me all the more convinced that MUSIC and DANCING is essential to life. i hear a song from the soundtrack on the radio and i know exactly what scene in the movie it’s from. and last, every time it’s on tv i am awash with sadness that patrick swayze is no longer of this world.

In a time when we are all sadly jaded by one horrific headline after another, these accounts have broken through with a humanity and respect for each person who’s story they tell. I’m catching up on the posts I missed during a long-weekend away up on the Minnesota/Canadian boarder. The link about putting the phone away really hit home. There was no cell reception or Internet connection at the remote lodge where we stayed. That meant my husband and toddler-daughter got an immediate response when talking to me, not a murmured “mmhmmm” or “just a minute” while I searched the net. Instead of my husband and I taking forever to decide where to go as we both took turns responding to emails or texts, we hit the ground running early every morning, full of energy and curiosity. I spent three days looking up at the beautiful fall colors and huge, blue sky instead of down at my phone. I have never felt so connected to nature and my family; I just have to discipline myself to go phone-free more often!

Oh, too funny about Dirty Dancing — by some crazy coincidence I’d been thinking about that movie on the same day, and found out my husband had never seen it. We watched it Friday night with our six-week-old son dozing on the couch between us, and when we got to the big “Dance with me” love scene, our little man exuberantly farted his way through the entire scene! My husband was weeping with laughter. A far cry from watching it as a starry-eyed eighth grader with my girlfriends, but completely awesome in its own way!

I cannot believe you’ve never seen Dirty Dancing! So curious to know what you think as an adult. I saw it in 2nd grade for the first time (I am now 35). Enjoy!!

That eggplant dish really is amazing! I made it a few weeks ago and it went over so well I had to make it again two days later! Also loved your poached eggs on roasted tomatoes recipe from earlier this week. I typically make shakshuka but this was a nice variation and a good way to use up all the cherry tomatoes from our garden. Your recipe recs have been so on point lately!

This weekend I styled a client and then spent the rest of the time with my cousin from Sweden who was visiting! It was so much fun (aside from the cold weather)! Hope you had a great weekend also! xo yael

My mom showed me Dirty Dancing when I was about 8 but fast forwarded through all the “mature” scenes. But you better believe when I was old enough I watched, rewound, watched, and rewound again the scene where Patrick Swayze gets out of bed. Scandalous!

I’ve been living in Japan for 7 years now, and it’s true – there are kids on the train and walking the streets unsupervised. But things are changing. Recently, there have been a number of abductions and murders that have made national headlines, and more people are changing the way they treat their kids. The most recent one (two months ago) involved two junior high school kids that were murdered in Osaka by a crazy person.
